Fall is one of my favorite seasons for family portraits—cozy sweaters, rich colors, and that golden light make everything feel timeless. Choosing the right outfits is part of the fun, but it doesn’t have to be stressful. Here are my five tips to keep your wardrobe simple, flattering, and true to you this season:
1. Avoid Matching Patterns
Plaid on plaid on plaid? Not the vibe. Too many patterns can make your photos feel busy. Instead, pick one subtle pattern (like dad’s flannel or a child’s polka-dot dress) and let everyone else’s outfits balance it out with solids.
2. Choose One Color and Compliment It
Think of your outfits like a color palette. Pick one anchor color—rust, olive, navy, cream, or mustard are all gorgeous for fall—and build around it with complementary tones. This makes your family look cohesive without looking too “matchy-matchy.”

3. Let the Kids Have a Say
Children light up when they feel included. Give them a choice between two sweater colors or let them pick their favorite boots. Not only will it spark their excitement, but it will also capture more genuine smiles (and fewer battles on photo day).
4. Make It Fun and Enjoy the Ride
Your family photos aren’t just about the final gallery—they’re about the memory of that day. Play, laugh, run, cuddle. The joy you feel together will always shine brighter than the perfect outfit.
5. Unlearn Old Rules and Find Your True Colors—Literally
Forget the outdated idea that everyone has to wear jeans and white shirts. Instead, lean into your individuality. Choose colors that reflect your personality and make you feel confident. Your portraits should celebrate who you are as a family, not follow a template.
